Lions Shock Top Seeded Cumberlands, Finishing 2-0 on the Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Bryan College's Lions came to Williamsburg with nothing to lose and left with everything to prove. In a stunning result that sent shockwaves through the NAIA Tournament bracket, the Lions dismantled the No. 1 seed and fifth-ranked University of the Cumberlands 9–2 on Monday evening — on the Patriots' own home field — capping a perfect 2-0 opening day.

Bryan wasted no time announcing its intentions. In the very first inning, catcher Jayron Morris crushed a two-run home run to left center, plating leadoff man Cyrus Campos — who had reached on a hit-by-pitch — and staking the Lions to an early 2–0 advantage they would never relinquish.

The third inning proved decisive. Bryan erupted for three more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Morgan Halliday through the middle that made it 5–0 and chased any lingering doubt from the visitors' dugout. Denajh Williams was the catalyst all game long, reaching base repeatedly and finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double. Will Curcio went 3-for-4 and crossed the plate twice, while Caleb Ramsey added two hits including a double of his own.

Bryan added two more in the fifth — capped by a Brodie Genter RBI double to left — and tacked on insurance in the seventh and eighth to build their final margin of seven.

The story on the mound belonged to Ty Johnson, who was nothing short of magnificent. The right-hander went the distance, throwing all nine innings and surrendering just two runs — only one of them earned — on seven hits. He struck out four and earned his sixth win of the season, improving to 6–3 on the year. Cumberlands mustered their only offense in the seventh on a two-RBI double by Johnboy Rittenhouse, but it was far too little, far too late against a Bryan team that was clicking on all cylinders.

Cumberlands starter Wesley Culley, who came in at 9–1 on the year, absorbed the loss — surrendering seven runs on nine hits in just 4.1 innings. The Patriots, who entered the day at 46–9 and were the top seed in the Williamsburg Regional, could not find an answer for Bryan's relentless offensive attack.

The Lions' win comes on the heels of a victory over Central Baptist earlier in the day, making Bryan a perfect 2-0 in the Opening Round. They will take on third seeded William Carey, at 3:30 pm on Tuesday.
