Lions Stun Top Seeded Buffs in Nine Innings

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Nobody outside the Bryan College dugout expected what unfolded Wednesday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium. But when Morgan Halliday's two-out single found right-center field in the top of the ninth, plating Denajh Williams with the go-ahead run, the Lions had delivered the tournament's signature upset — dropping the top seed into the losers bracket.

Bryan College, a .500 club entering the postseason at 24-23, out-dueled a Milligan program that had won 38 of its first 49 games. The margin was razor-thin and the execution was anything but accidental.

Senior right-hander Ty Johnson authored the finest outing of his career, working all nine innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Johnson struck out one, walked one, and induced 13 ground-ball outs across 104 pitches — relentlessly attacking the Milligan lineup and daring them to put the ball in play. He improves to 4-3 on the season.

The Lions struck first in the third inning when Caleb Ramsey laced a run-scoring double to right-center that scored Logan Stradley, who had entered as a pinch runner, to put Bryan ahead 1-0. Ramsey advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Bryan couldn't push another run across, leaving Milligan with a chance to respond.

Milligan's Canyon Geren was equally brilliant in defeat. The right-hander struck out 12 Bryan batters across eight innings on 108 pitches, holding the Lions to just three hits through eight frames and keeping his team within striking distance despite their modest offense against Johnson.

The Buffaloes finally broke through in the seventh when Braxton Baird scored on a Cade Kalehuawehe single to center, knotting the game at one. It was the lone blemish on Johnson's ledger — and it set the stage for a final two innings of white-knuckle baseball.

The decisive ninth began when Williams doubled to left-center to lead off the inning. Reliever Sai Vickers entered for Milligan and surrendered the go-ahead single to Halliday two batters later. Johnson then needed only nine pitches to retire the Buffaloes in order in the bottom half, punctuated by a final flyout from Brody Melton that sent the Bryan bench into celebration.

Williams finished 1-for-4 with a double and the decisive run scored. Ramsey went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Halliday's two-out knock in the ninth was the difference-maker the Lions will remember long after this tournament concludes.

For Milligan, the loss is a sobering wake-up call for a program that had dominated the AAC all season. The Buffaloes aren't done — the double-elimination format keeps them alive — but they will now have to claw through the losers bracket and win out to claim a tournament title they once appeared destined for. One more loss and their season is over.

Bryan advances in the tournament and remains in prime position to make a deep run.
