Lady Lions Sweep Double Header At Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - The Lady Lions softball team swept Montreat College in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning Game 1 by a score of 7-3 and cruising to a 14-5 victory in Game 2 to improve to 19-15 on the season.

Game 1: Bryan 7, Montreat 3
Bryan found itself in an early hole after Montreat scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning on a fielding error, but the Lions responded in a big way in the third inning. Ava Saul launched a three-run home run to center field, scoring Juliana Santillanes and Lakyn Lockhart to give Bryan a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish.

Saul was the story of the day in Game 1, going yard twice and finishing with six RBI. Her second home run came in the seventh inning — another three-run shot, this time to right center — which proved to be the knockout blow, pushing the lead to 7-3. Lakyn Lockhart reached base multiple times and scored three runs, while Juliana Santillanes added two runs scored of her own.

In the circle, Maddie Lee earned the win, tossing four shutless innings after allowing two unearned runs in the first. Ava Saul came on in relief and closed it out, earning her second save of the season. Montreat starter Lauryn Bishop took the loss, surrendering six earned runs over a complete game effort.

Game 2: Bryan 14, Montreat 5
Bryan came out swinging in Game 2, putting up five runs in the first inning and never looking back. Savanna Schaffer was the offensive standout, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Maddie Lee added a two-RBI double in the first, and Abbie Young chipped in a two-RBI double of her own in the second to blow the game open early.

Lakyn Lockhart had another strong outing at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, while Ava Garay and Maddie Lee each contributed multiple hits. Montreat got a solo home run from Nadilyn Eason in the third inning and a two-RBI double from Bre Speight in the fifth, but it was never enough to seriously threaten Bryan's lead.

Britni Newbille picked up the win in relief after KP Smith started.

With the sweep, Bryan improves to 19-15 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The will look to build on this success as they host Brenau in an AAC match up on Tuesday.
