Lions Hold On to Avoid Road Scare at Montreat

Montreat, NC -  Kadee Ferrell pulls down 13 rebounds and gets her 3rd double-double of the season in a 73-69 Bryan win over Montreat.  With the win, the Lady Lions move to 20-5 overall and 18-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference. 

The Lady Lions continued their trend of starting games hot taking a 26-4 first quarter lead. The Lions shot 50% from the field in the first half while holding the Cavaliers to under 30% and taking a 41-17 lead heading into the half. 

Samantha Russell led the way in scoring with 18 points and collecting 8 rebounds. Torie Brooks followed Russell with 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kaitlynn Hennessee had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Nevaeh Majors rounded out the Lady Lions double figures club with 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st quarter:
  • The Lady Lions forced 9 Cavaliers turnovers in the 1st quarter alone.  
  • Bryan would start the game with a Kadee Ferrell steal that led to a Samantha Russell three. 
  • At the 1:50 mark it was a steal by Russell to an Allissa Mulaski layup to give Bryan a 24-4 lead. 

2nd Quarter:
  • A Hennessee And-1 layup put the Lady Lions up 25 points (29-4) with 9:08 left in the quarter.  
  • A Samantha Russell three off an assist from Torie Brooks with 4 seconds left gave the Lions a 41-17 lead going into halftime. 

3rd Quarter:
  • The Cavaliers turned up the defense in the 3rd quarter holding Bryan to only 30.8% shooting. 
  • An And-1 layup from the Cavaliers cut the Lions lead to 13 with 3:45 left in the quarter (48-35)

4th Quarter:
  • The Cavaliers would start the 4th with a 10-3 run to trim the lead to 54-51. 
  • It was an Allissa Mulaski three that would answer the Montreat run 57-51 with 7:17 left.
  • After several traded buckets, it was an offensive rebound from Kadee Ferrell that led to a Nevaeh Majors jumper with 40 seconds left that gave Bryan a 70-63 lead. 
  • After a couple of buckets, the Cavaliers' Virginia Edmondson gets an And-1 jumper to make it a 2 point game 71-69.
  • Two clutch Samantha Russell free throws would ice the game and give Bryan a 73-69 win.


Looking Forward: The Lady Lions will be at home Wednesday 2/14 at 5:30 PM for a battle for 1st place in the conference vs. Reinhardt University.
