David Holcomb

David Holcomb is an Advisor and Sensei for the Bryan College Martial Arts Academy program. He designed the development program to provide students with a balanced mix of martial arts training and spiritual formation.

“To be able to bring together the two things that influenced my life the most – my martial arts training and my Bryan College experience – is truly an honor,” Holcomb said.

Students have the opportunity to work towards a black belt in Isshinryu karate or their 1st through 4th degrees. The school will also offer scholarships to students based on demonstrated martial arts proficiency as well as financial need.

Through this program, which is fully backed by the International Isshinryu Karate Association, students will receive credit for their training and have opportunities to compete annually in weapons kata, empty hand kata, and point fighting. In addition to martial arts training, students will develop a biblical worldview as well as the ability to think and communicate well to others.

Holcomb graduated from Bryan with a B.A. in history, a specialization in Russian history, and a minor in Bible. He has a 6th-degree black belt with 41 years of training in Isshinryu Karate. Other areas of expertise include Jujutsu (concentration Judo), Capoeira, Kyusho Jitsu, and Chen style Tiajijuan.

- Isshinryu Karate, Black Belt 6th Dan

- Judo, Grey Belt

- Lineage: Shimabuku-Long-Shaeffer-Markhum-Park-Holcomb

He has competed in gymnastics, finishing level two optional, played varsity tennis as well as with the United States Tennis Association, varsity soccer, and served as a swim team coach.

Holcomb brings a plethora of business knowledge, having served as a Director in multiple YMCA Associations and almost eight years in the financial industry with Bullnear, a boutique investment firm in St. Louis, Mo. In addition, he owned and was head instructor of World Arts of St. Louis. While serving in those professional capacities, he was fortunate to serve as a volunteer on the St. Louis Prayer Breakfast Committee, YMCA of the Ozarks Board of Managers, and was a Past President of the Florissant Valley Kiwanis. One of David's most passionate interests is connecting people with careers that fit them well. He has served as a "mock interviewer" for many peers over the years and currently for students at Bryan College during their mock interview day. "I love the hot seat interview,"  it brings out the fighting side of hiring. I want people to be prepared for the toughest interview so that anything less will be enjoyable. David has felt blessed to be in careers that he has enjoyed and wants others to have that opportunity if God allows.

He currently oversees the Martial Arts Academy program and is the Director of the Bryan College Scholarship Fund.

"I am very excited for the Martial Arts Academy. It is my hope and prayer that this becomes a standard-bearer for incredible teaching and training in martial arts and that it will help lead the way in the areas of self-confidence and respect for all people. God designed us in amazing ways and I hope that we develop avenues for our students to see and learn how to use all of them effectively."

David currently resides in Dayton, Tenn. with his wife Diana Holcomb ('94 Bryan College graduate) and two daughters, Isabella and Anastasia.
