ASHEVILLE, N.C. —
Cal Drake etched his name into Bryan College athletics history, claiming All-American honors at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the men's high jump — ending a seven-year drought for the Lions program on the national stage.
Drake tied for sixth place in a competitive 26-athlete field, clearing 2.03 meters (6 feet, 7¾ inches) to secure his All-American distinction. The high jump title at the 2026 championships was ultimately claimed by Keondre Gkllover of Life University (GA), who cleared 2.15 meters — but Drake's performance proved he could compete with the best small-college jumpers in the country, finishing just seven centimeters off the winning mark. The achievement carries significant weight for the Bryan athletics department. It marks the Lions' first Track & Field All-American since 2018, a gap that makes the milestone all the more meaningful for a program working to re-establish itself on the national scene.
Earning All-American status at the NAIA level is no small feat. Drake had to navigate one of the most physically demanding individual disciplines in track and field, where margin for error is razor-thin and consistency across multiple attempts separates contenders from champions. Clearing 2.03 meters against a field of 26 of the nation's top NAIA jumpers demonstrated not just athletic ability, but composure under pressure.
What makes this moment particularly promising is that Drake's story isn't finished. With another year of eligibility ahead, he returns to Dayton with the kind of experience that only competing at nationals can provide. He now knows what it takes to perform on the biggest stage in NAIA track and field — the atmosphere, the competition level, the mental demands. That knowledge is invaluable heading into next season.
With Drake returning and the bar — figuratively and literally — set higher than ever, Bryan track and field has every reason for optimism heading into the 2026–27 season.
