Bryan College Falls in AAC Championship, but Lions Punch Ticket to National Tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. —Bryan College's improbable run through the 2026 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament came to a heartbreaking end Saturday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium, as the sixth-seeded Lions fell to third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan 8-2 in the championship game. But even in defeat, Bryan had already secured something no one saw coming when the week began — an automatic berth to the opening round of the national tournament.

It wasn't the ending Bryan fans had dreamed of after a week that saw the Lions knock off fourth-seeded Spartanburg Methodist on Wednesday before stunning top-seeded Milligan University — not once, but twice — to punch their ticket to the title game. The Lions had done the unthinkable, and in doing so had guaranteed themselves a spot on the national stage regardless of how Saturday afternoon played out.

Against the Bulldogs, Bryan never found its footing. Tennessee Wesleyan jumped in front in the second inning when Ethan Wright doubled to left field, plating David Ballenilla, and the Bulldogs steadily extended their lead from there. By the time Rob Gordon launched a two-run homer to center field in the fifth — one of five Wesleyan doubles on the afternoon — Bryan's deficit had swelled to 5-1 and starter Bryce Liechty had been pulled.

Gordon was the story of the day for Tennessee Wesleyan, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI, and a stolen base. He accounted for more than half of the Bulldogs' eight runs driven in and was practically unstoppable all afternoon.

The Lions did show flashes. Jayron Morris gave Bryan a momentary lift in the fifth with a solo home run to left — a booming shot off Wesleyan starter Colton Brumley — and Morris later added a double in the ninth to keep a final rally flickering. But the Lions went just 6-for-32 on the day and stranded five on base. Five errors — three of them by third baseman Will Curcio — repeatedly gave Tennessee Wesleyan extra opportunities it didn't need.

Brumley was dominant for the Bulldogs, working seven innings and allowing just two runs on five hits while fanning three. He improved to 4-0 on the season. Reliever Bradley Johnson then locked things down with two perfect innings to close it out, striking out four of the seven batters he faced.

Liechty took the loss, falling to 3-2 after surrendering four earned runs over four innings. Ryan Ely and Jd McCurry combined for four more innings of relief, but the damage was already done.

Bryan finishes the regular season and conference tournament at 27-23, a record that hardly tells the full story of what this team has accomplished. The Lions arrived in Kingsport as a long shot, dispatched the top seed twice, and earned their way to a national tournament berth in the process. Saturday's loss stings, but for Bryan College baseball, the best may still be ahead.

The Lions will wait and see where the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament will take them. The Selection Show is scheduled for May 6th at 5:00 pm.
