PIKEVILLE, Ky. — KP Smith made history on Tuesday afternoon, recording her 200th career strikeout during Bryan College's second game of a doubleheader against Pikeville. While the milestone came in a 11–3 loss in the second game, the day started on a sweet note as the Lions picked up the opener 9–4, splitting the twin bill on the road.
Smith, who now sits at 201 strikeouts and counting, has been a cornerstone of the Bryan pitching staff throughout her career. The right-hander took the loss in game two, surrendering six earned runs over three innings.
Game 1: Bryan 9, Pikeville 4
Bryan wasted no time in the opener, erupting for five runs in the first inning against Pikeville starter Chloe Calton.
Ava Saul's two-run double to right-center plated
Juliana Santillanes and
Lakyn Lockhart to open the scoring, and the Lions kept the line moving.
Lily Taylor singled home Saul, and back-to-back unearned runs capped the frame to give Bryan a commanding 5–0 lead before Pikeville had even recorded an out.
Pikeville clawed back to 5–4 through four innings, with Ashlyn Dixon delivering the big blow — a two-run double in the fourth — and Addison Johnson adding an RBI single. But Bryan's bats answered in the fifth and sixth, with
Brooklyn Malone and
Madison Carpenter each driving in runs to push the lead back out.
Lily Taylor's RBI double in the sixth and a sacrifice fly from
Kaycee Baldwin rounded out the scoring for a 9–4 final.
Saul was brilliant in relief, retiring 13 of 14 batters she faced over 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 1–0.
Maddie Lee started and was credited with the pitching decision for Bryan as well, handling the first 3.1 frames.
Lily Taylor had a game-high three hits, while
Juliana Santillanes added two hits and two runs scored.
Game 2: Bryan 3, Pikeville 11
The nightcap was a different story. Pikeville's Brianna Johnsen (now 9–2) was dominant from start to finish, scattering seven hits over a complete-game five-inning effort and holding Bryan to just one earned run. The Bears, now 20–11, used a four-run third and a five-run fourth to break the game open, with Rylee Carter's grand slam to left field in the fourth providing the knockout blow.
Chloy Creech went 3-for-3 with two RBI for Pikeville, and Carter finished with four RBI on the afternoon. Bryan managed runs from
Juliana Santillanes and
Ava Saul — the latter driving in two — but never seriously threatened against Johnsen.
Bryan improves to 22–16 overall and 12–5 in conference play. The Lions will look to build on the split and keep pace in the conference standings as the regular season winds down.
