DAYTON Tenn. - Bryan College softball dropped both games of a home doubleheader to Columbia International University on Friday, falling 4-0 in the opener and 2-0 in extra innings in the nightcap.
In game one, CIU pitcher Isabella Davis was dominant, tossing a complete game shutout while allowing just seven hits and walking none. The Lions managed only two strikeouts against her across seven innings. Offensively, Bryan had chances but couldn't push a run across, leaving seven runners on base.
CIU got all the offense it needed in the fifth inning when Tristan Phillips launched a three-run home run, her only hit of the game, to break open what had been a 1-0 contest. Caydon Thompson had driven in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the third.
Game two was a tighter affair. Bryan pitcher
Maddie Lee was brilliant, holding CIU to just ten hits over ten innings while allowing zero earned runs. The Lions actually out-hit CIU 11-10 on the day but couldn't come through with the big hit when it mattered, stranding 16 runners on base.
The game remained scoreless through nine innings before CIU pushed two runs across in the top of the tenth. Phillips again came up big, doubling home the first run, and Abigail Guthrie added a sacrifice RBI to make it 2-0. Bryan loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth but couldn't score, ending the game.
With the losses, Bryan falls to 22-18 overall and 12-8 in conference play. The Lady Lions will be on the road tomorrow as they take on the Lions of Freed Hardeman University (RV).
