KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Nobody gave Bryan College much of a chance walking into the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday morning. Seeded ninth in the bracket and matched against Truett McConnell -- a team that had beaten them twice already this season -- the Lions had every reason to feel like the odds were stacked against them. They did not seem to notice.
Behind a balanced scoring effort and stifling second-half defense, the Lions rode out a dramatic finish to knock off the eighth-seeded Bears 62-57, advancing to the next round of the AAC Tournament and sending shockwaves through the bracket.
The two teams played to an identical 29-29 tie at halftime -- a fitting mirror image of a rivalry that had been so even all year. But when the second half began, it was Bryan who turned up the intensity. The Lions quickly pushed their lead to as many as 11 points, going up 48-37 midway through the half, capped by a
Regale Moore three-pointer off a
Derek Curtis assist that sent Truett McConnell calling back-to-back timeouts.
Truett McConnell refused to fold. Preston Kent -- who led all scorers with 17 points -- continued to make plays down the stretch, and the Bears chipped away until Isaac Brito-Vasquez tied the game at 55 with 1:34 remaining. The MeadowView Marriott crowd was on its feet.
That is when
Jerry Taylor Jr. stepped up. The Bryan forward -- who finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists -- converted a layup with 1:04 left and drew the foul, knocking down the and-one free throw to give Bryan a 58-55 lead they would not relinquish.
Ty Gibbs sealed it with two free throws in the final minute, and a final Taylor Jr. layup off an
Izaiha Bredwood assist with 19 seconds remaining made it official: 62-57, Bryan College.
Gibbs paced Bryan with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, knocking down two three-pointers.
Kole Torres added 11 points and six rebounds, while
Haydn Moten contributed nine points and eight boards. Bredwood posted a quiet but efficient line with six points, four rebounds, and five steals -- the most by any player in the contest.
Bryan won the battle of the glass, outrebounding Truett McConnell 39-37, and dominated in the paint 32-22. The Lions also converted 13 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds, a major factor in a game where efficiency was at a premium for both teams. Bryan shot 38.1% from the floor while the Bears managed just 35.4%.
Turnovers proved decisive for Truett McConnell, who coughed the ball up 20 times to Bryan's 14. The Lions turned those miscues into 13 points off turnovers. For the Bears, Kent's 17-point night was supported by Jadon Yeh's 13 and Shawn Walker's 10, but 20 turnovers and a 2-of-12 performance from three-point range in the second half ultimately doomed their comeback.
Bryan (12-16, 8-11 AAC) entered the tournament having dropped both regular season contests to the Bears. Truett McConnell (12-16, 9-10) had edged out a slightly better conference record to earn the eighth seed. Wednesday's result flips the narrative entirely, sending a Bryan squad that many had written off into the next round.
"I am extremely proud of the way our team fought," said Head Coach
Jason Laatsch. "Facing a very talented and well-coached TMU team, we knew we had our hands full," he added. "When it comes to postseason basketball, toughness and physicality win, and I thought we did that today," he continued. "We have been in a lot of close games this year, and I think those experiences helped us today," he finished.
It was a statement win for a program that has battled adversity all season. Bryan's ability to hold their lead when Truett McConnell surged and to execute in the closing minutes speaks to the character of this group. Tournament basketball has a way of leveling the playing field, and the Lions played their best basketball when the pressure was highest.
Bryan advances to the next round of the AAC Tournament, where they will face a fresh challenge, No. 1 seeded Pikeville. If Wednesday's gritty performance is any indication, the Lions are not done making noise. The Lions will tip off against the Bears at 10:15 AM on Wednesday morning.
