Softball Splits Doubleheader with No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Lady Lions split a doubleheader with fourth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett on Tuesday at the Grizzly SB Complex, winning the opener 5–4 before falling 8–0 in the nightcap.

The Lions improved to 3–7 on the season with the split, but the first game was the highlight of the day. Bryan trailed 2–0 heading into the second inning before Ava Saul ignited the offense with a solo home run to left center. The Lions continued to chip away, taking the lead for good with a two-run third inning capped by a double from Maddie Lee, and added two more in the fourth on a Brooklyn Malone double and an RBI by Savanna Schaffer.

Bryan finished the game with 12 hits, with contributions spread throughout the lineup. Malone, Abbie Young, Lakyn Lockhart, and Ava Garay each had two hits, while Saul finished 2-for-4 with her home run and an RBI single.

KP Smith earned the complete-game win in the circle, going all seven innings and allowing just three earned runs on 11 hits against one of the top offenses in the NAIA.

Georgia Gwinnett cut the deficit to one in the fifth inning on an unearned run, but Smith held firm in the final two innings to preserve the 5–4 victory.

The Grizzlies bounced back in the second game, with pitcher A. Self tossing a five-inning shutout and allowing just two hits. The Bryan offense was held scoreless as GGC plated eight runs on 11 hits.

Despite the split, Tuesday's opener showed that Bryan is capable of competing with the best teams in the country on any given day. They will host Cumberland University on Friday in a double-header.
