Columbia, SC – Bryan College picked up a crucial road win on Saturday, defeating Columbia College 2-0 in a defensive showcase. The Lions improved to 2-11-3 overall and 2-7-3 in conference play with the victory, while Columbia fell to 6-6-4 (4-4-4 in conference).
Bryan struck early and often in the opening period, with forward
Beckham Davidson breaking through in the 21st minute for his first goal of the match. Davidson wasn't done making an impact, as he assisted on the second goal just nine minutes later when
Josh Hernandez found the back of the net at the 30:42 mark to give the Lions a commanding 2-0 halftime advantage.
The story of the match was the stellar performance of Bryan goalkeeper
Santiago Morales, who turned away all 11 shots on goal he faced over the full 90 minutes to earn his first win of the season. Morales was particularly busy in the second half, making crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet as Columbia pressed for a way back into the match.
Despite being outshot 17-7 overall and conceding nine corner kicks to just one, Bryan made the most of their limited opportunities. The Lions managed four shots on goal compared to Columbia's 11, but clinical finishing in the first half proved to be the difference.
Columbia controlled much of the possession and created numerous chances, with Gabriel Hugo-Guadagno leading the way with five shots, but the Koalas couldn't find a way past Morales. Columbia used two goalkeepers, with Mathias Gravesen starting before Nathan Huff came on in the second half.
The match remained physical throughout, with Bryan committing 11 fouls to Columbia's nine.
