DAYTON, Tenn. – The Bryan College men's soccer team fought back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Johnson University on Tuesday evening.
Caleb Randles gave the Lions the lead in the 27th minute, finishing off a well-worked assist from
Clayton Encinias for his first goal of the season. The breakthrough came after a competitive opening half that saw Bryan withstand early pressure from the home side.
Johnson University dominated possession and shot attempts throughout the match, outshooting Bryan 26-21 overall and holding an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Lions' defensive effort, anchored by goalkeeper
Justus Feit, kept them in the game. Feit made nine saves on the night, turning away several dangerous chances.
The match turned physical in the second half, with both teams collecting multiple yellow cards. Bryan received four cautions, while Johnson picked up three. The chippy play culminated in Bryan's lead evaporating in the 81st minute when Felipe Evans equalized for Johnson, assisted by Ru Reh.
Sammy Gomez led Bryan's offensive effort with five shots, all on target, while
Beckham Davidson contributed five attempts before being substituted late. For Johnson, Joaquin Saaverdra was relentless with seven shots, and Ru Reh added six while contributing the crucial assist on the tying goal.
Johnson goalkeeper Jose Cogollo was the busier of the two netminders, making 13 saves to preserve the draw for his side.
The Lions will look to build on the solid defensive performance as they finish up the rest of the regular season.
