Lions Sweep Opening Day

DAYTON, TN — The Bryan College Lions Baseball team hosted the University of Rio Grande Storm Friday afternoon for a double header at Ridgeland High School. Due to field conditions at Bryan College the game was moved to Rossville, GA. It was a big day for the Lions offensively taking game one 11-8 and game two 10-5.

GAME 1:
The Lions could not have started any better. Senior pitcher Cam Harvey started the game with back to back strikeouts and forcing a ground out. Harvey would finish with 2.0 IP, 4 strikeouts, and giving up only 1 earned run. Senior Kade Cohoon would keep the Lions momentum going as he connected on a solo home run into deep left center.  The Lions would continue through the first inning scoring 2 more runs off a Daniel Dryden double giving the Lions a 3-0 lead ending the first.

In the 3rd, the Lions would continue their scoring ways with two home runs. The first being a two run HR from Daniel Dryden, Dryden finished game 1 going 2-3, 4 RBIs, and 2 BB. The second HR of the 3rd inning was a solo HR from Senior Danny Marquez to give the Lions a 6-2 lead. Marquez would finish game 1 going 3-5, along with 3 RBIs.

Despite a later innings rally from Rio Grande, it was Fifth Year Senior David Walker's 4 innings pitch that would earn the win in the first game of the afternoon. David Walker would go 4 IP, 4 strikeouts, and only give up 2 runs. Lions start the season 1-0 after finishing out the game with an 11-8 win.

GAME 2:
30 minutes later, the Lions and the Storm would begin game 2 with sixth year senior Jacob Buffington starting on the mound for Bryan. Buffington would go 5 IP, 6 strikeouts, and only giving up 5 hits.

The Storm would try and continue their offensive momentum from game 1. Rio would take a 2-0 lead after a Bryan fielding error. In the bottom of the first, it was Junior Dante Morton who wanted in on the home run party and sent a solo shot into left center to cut the lead to 2-1. Morton would finish the day 2-5 and 4 RBIs.

The Lions would struggle throughout the early innings of the game, going into the bottom of the 6th inning 4-2. But it was in the bottom of the 6th where the Lions would start to connect. After a wild pitch from the Rio pitcher and good Bryan base-running allowed Daniel Dryden to score and runners to advance, it was back to back singles from sophomore Mason Parker and Senior Kade Cohoon that gave Bryan its first lead of the game 5-4. The scoring didn't stop there, immediately after that, Dante Morton kept his fantastic day going with a well hit triple that brought in 3 runners to extend the lead to 8-4. Morton would cross home plate the very next play on a Bryson Lofton grounder to end the 6th leading 9-4.

The Lions would go on to score one more on a Mason Parker sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th. Jacob Almon would finish out the game for the Lions striking out 5 straight Rio batters. But Clay Smith would get the win for Bryan with 2 IP, 4 strikeouts and only 1 ER.

Next Time out:
The Lions will be back home to play the University of Northwestern Ohio Friday February 2nd for a double header beginning at 2:00 PM.
