Lady Lions Dominate Conference Opener

DAYTON, TN - The Bryan College women's basketball team opened the 2023-2024 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) season Wednesday night for a home matchup against the Johnson University Royals. Led by a tremendous defensive performance early, the Lady Lions dominated throughout taking down Johnson 89-68.

The Lady Lions put on a show defensively to start the game. They were able to hold Johnson to just 2 points in the first quarter on 1-13 shooting and forcing 9 Turnovers. Using the defense to create easy offense, the Lady Lions were led by a 10 point first quarter from Torie Brooks. The Lady Lions as a team were 5-10 from the three point line to help dominate the first quarter 28-2.

The momentum shifted some as the Lions hot shooting cooled down and Johnson collected themselves offensively. Bryan was led by Kaitlynn Hennessee's 7 points and 2 steals in the quarter to keep the lead at 24 headed into halftime 44-20.

Right after halftime it was Samantha Russell who set the tone with an early layup. The Royals continued to apply pressure on the Lions, eventually getting the lead down to 18. But Bryan continued to knock down the three ball going 4-9 in the 3rd to maintain their route. Bryan lead 67-47 going into the 4th.

Bryan kept their pace with Torie Brooks and Samantha Russell scoring 7 a piece in the 4th. With the Royals continuing to try to ramp up the pace, it was Bryan who capitalized and forced 5 fourth quarter turnovers carrying them to a 68-89 victory.

"I was really proud of the way this team guarded tonight." said Coach Gabe Johnson. "We can clean up a few things, but everyone who played tonight affected the game and I can't ask for better."
